What the does city want to show me ? / Que quiere mostarame la ciudad ?

21st of November 2023 was the presentation of my project ¿Qué quiere mostrarme la ciudad? (What the city wants to show me?) at NO LUGAR, Quito, Ecuador

A new project is coming up, but still so uncertain and vague like the new coming day who will come. What want the city of Quito to tell me.

On November 1, 2023, I started working on a new interdisciplinary project on urban and social environments of the city of Quito, Ecuador. The time frame for implementation is rather limited as it is only 18 days. The city has to tell me what it wants and I try to fulfill it

Now as the project is developing and begins to take form it is not longer what city want to tell me, but what does the city want to show me.

Coordinator and curator of the project Ruben Diaz (no lugar)

With thanks to Stroom, The Hague, Netherlands

In conjunction of my project here in Quito I had an interesting talk with the curator and interdisciplinary artist, independent researcher and cultural manager Tania Lombeida Mino at the Museo de Ciudad of Quito She is also one of founders and directors of the cultural organization Artes Mujeres Ecuador. Her organisation is currently presenting an temporaly exhibition of the their project “Aun cuando todo esta nublado - Even when everything is cloudy” at the Museo de Ciudad

We talked about the idea and implementation about the project. Furthermore about the meaning Feminist art and women in the arts.

One more week until the final presentation on November 21, 2023 and the last few days to round off my project with the working title. “What the city wants to show me” refering to the city of Quito Things are taking shape, now two video works have already been edited and finished. Now it's time to tackle my upcoming performance, which is a combination of live performance, sound art and installation. That means rehearsing and arranging the props.

The installation made of jute ribbons and trees has several meanings. Making invisible boundaries and space visible – showing connections, how things are connected to one another. The relationships and connections between humans and nature. The idea arises that everything is connected to one another and that connections can be made visible.

Internationale Werkstattwoche – International Workshop Week

Internationale Werkstattwoche – International Workshop Week “Dignity

01.07.2023 – 10.07.2023 / Lüben, Lower Saxony. Germany

For ten days, 18 artists from seven nations stayed in the village of Lüben (today part of the town of Wittingen)/ The artists working in the fields of painting, drawing, photography, video and installation. During Workshop week I created two installations (Land Art) "9048 - Courage, Wisdom, Compassion" and "9049 - Between Heaven and Earth" in the public space of the village. Worked on pupils day one afternoon with two 11 years old pupils. During the final presentation days on 8th and 9th of July 2023 I performed three time a new live performance called "The Plant" .

The concept approach towards the theme of Dignity is based on buddhist and Zen philosophy, but at the same time containing autobiographical elements. Therefor the installation work and the performance reflect the theme in a more  metaphorical and symbolic style rather then in a direct manner.

The idea of installation 9048 is based on the 3 steps on path of reaching dignity which leasd towards Enlightment. The three steps are courage, wisdom, compassion.  In contrast to the first installation, the second installation "9049"  expresses more  the invisible boundaries between heaven, earth and life. Furthermore, that everything in this world is visibly and invisibly connected. Dignity cannot be touched or visible object. Dignity is an expression, an attitude. Something between heaven and earth. All living beings and even objects have dignity. But dignity is a fragile thing. Which can easily be destroyed, by others or by oneself.

The performance is made up by deliberate movements and without words. To reflect the concept of dignity in relation to time, stillness, the power of solitude and the fact that every living being and every object has its dignity.

During the pupils day, when I worked with the two students in the afternoon. I gave as few instructions and interfered with their actions as little as possible. The result of this afternoon was both creating with the wind and experimenting with materials and elements. They also create a delicate land art art piece with the rope and branches between two large trees. The desire to get off the ground and fly away was the inspiration for their creativity on this particularly afternoon.

Pedvale

During the whole month of May 2023 I was engaged with a new interdisciplinary project at Pedvale Art Park in Sabile, Latvia. The red flag indicates my projects have reached the finish line at Pedvale and the point of the presentation. The overall project is simply named "Pevale" after the location of Pedvale.

Within a month I created a land art installation called "9047" or ("A place between mountains") and gave a live performance called "Stones" with the integration of the land art installation. In addition, a video work entitled "Structure & Pattern" was created. I also experimented with the sound, still life and video performance. Finally, I conducted a workshop on the subject of "social sculpture".

However, this interdisciplinary project differs from all larger projects that have emerged in recent years. It is still an interdisciplinary project consisting of several elements. But it was individual, there was no collaboration with other artists, art students or a community. Aside from some technical assistance from sculptor Ojars Arvids Feldbergs and the implementation of the 'Social Sculpture' workshop, this was deliberately not a collaborative project - it falls under the 'Lone Wolf' category. At the same time, however, it is very site-specific and contains some autobiographical elements

funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut as part of the CULTURE MOVES EUROPE funding program

"The State of The World " always means a summarizing view, the definition of an interim balance, which presupposes an occupation, an analysis, one's own positioning. For the first exhibition of the season, the Kunstverein was calling for analogue (non-digital) print work, such as, woodcuts, linocuts, silkscreen Between horror and hope, hesitation and fearlessness, political view and individual life perspective, scientifically based or subjectively meandering - we want to unfold a panopticon from very different perspectives.

This exhibition emerges from our shared research into questions of time, planetarity and connectivity as they relate to the horizon line - that ever-present bisection of space that informs much of our existence. Drawn from Gerald Murnane’s The Plains this exhibition attempts to manifest a particularly terrestrial ‘overview effect’, with attention to that ‘scant layer of haze where land and sky merged in the farthest distance’.
